RSD Meeting at Johnson School – Wednesday, September 21st

The RSD has scheduled a meeting with RSD representatives, including John White, new RSD superintendent, Johnson School staff and the community on Wed., Sept. 21, at 6:00 pm, at Johnson, 1800 Monroe St.. The purpose of the meeting is to discuss RSD’s plans for Johnson and other RSD run schools.

I hope all of you are able to attend and will pass the word to your friends and neighbors.

I have attached a link to an article on NOLA.com today about Patrick Dobard, RSD Deputy Superintendent for Policy and Community. The reason I am attaching the article is the last section “Engaging the Community.” I believe we have an opportunity to begin a dialogue with RSD and Johnson staff about how we can help create a viable neighborhood school.

New Orleans Tax Sales

Information on Tax Sales next Week

September 15th, 2011

Beacon Administrators and Blight Team Leaders:

2677 properties are scheduled for tax sale next week online.  Learn which properties are in your neighborhood and how you can help ensure sales will abate blight.

A tax sale is the sale of overdue taxes on a property.  A purchaser pays the overdue taxes to the City and receives a tax sale deed to the property.  After the period of three years (18 months if blighted), if the original owner does not pay back the taxes, the purchaser can pursue clear title to the property.  Tax sales can be a good investment opportunity for the purchaser and can in some cases lead to property acquisition.  To learn more about the details of the process, click here.

Although they generate income for the City, tax sales generally have not been a great tool to address blight because investors tend to live outside of the community and are not directly affected by the condition of the property.  They also have little incentive to clean up the property until they obtain title. Residents, on the other hand, are daily affected by the condition of the property and would be more likely, as purchasers, to clean it up.  We believe the only way tax sales can be successful in abating blight is for residents in the community to be the purchasers.  Purchasing a tax sale can be a good investment, can lead to property acquisition, and can better the quality of life in your neighborhood.

Click here to see the map we have created of the properties going to auction.  Please circulate this map to residents in your communities who might be interested in purchasing a tax sale, especially residents who own the property next door to one being auctioned.

The auction will be held online through CivicSource and will be open September 20th, 21st, and 22nd.

Please feel free to forward this to interested neighborhood leaders.

(5)    Increase Recycling in Your Neighborhood   Planning Meeting!

Wednesday, August 31st      6:30 – 7:30pm       Grace Episcopal Church (3700 Canal St.)

Would you like to help grow recycling participation in your neighborhood?  I’m reaching out to all neighborhoods across the city to plan a city-wide neighborhood recycling sign-up canvassing day.   The idea is to help spread the word, educate and hopefully get new people to sign-up for curbside recycling with the city.

If we can gather together some passionate people from each neighborhood who would be interested in leading the charge to canvass their own neighborhood and motivate other neighbors to help, I think we can really have an impact in boosting participation across the city.

Hope to see you there!                 Please feel free to contact me with any questions.
